Dengue Fever Awareness: Symptoms, Mosquito Protection and Warning Signs
Dengue is a viral illness spread primarily by infected Aedes mosquitoes. Travelers and people in areas where dengue circulates can reduce their risk by preventing mosquito bites and eliminating breeding sites.
Recognizing possible dengue symptoms
Dengue may cause fever, headache or pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint aches, nausea, vomiting, or a rash. Symptoms can overlap with other infections, so assessment by a healthcare professional is important.
How to reduce mosquito exposure
- Use an appropriate registered insect repellent as directed.
- Wear loose long sleeves and trousers, particularly in mosquito-prone areas.
- Use window screens, air conditioning, or bed nets when needed.
- Empty, cover, and clean containers that hold standing water around homes.
- Check current travel health recommendations before visiting affected areas.
Precautions if you become unwell
If you develop fever after travel to an area with dengue risk, contact a healthcare professional and mention your travel history. Rest and maintain hydration while following professional advice. If dengue is suspected, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen because of bleeding concerns; ask a clinician about suitable fever relief.
Warning signs: seek urgent care
Severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, unusual restlessness, or extreme tiredness require immediate medical assessment. Severe dengue can develop as the fever starts to go away.
