Hand Hygiene & Gloves: Small Habits That Matter
Why gloves work best alongside hand hygiene, correct selection, and careful changes.
Gloves are one part of protection
A box of examination gloves is familiar in every clinic, but wearing gloves alone does not complete an infection-prevention routine. Hand hygiene and appropriate glove use work together. Staff should follow the facility’s infection-control policy and the instructions for each product.
Keep hand hygiene in the routine
CDC guidance explains that gloves do not replace hand hygiene. Clean hands before putting on gloves when indicated, and after taking them off. Change gloves when moving between patients and between activities when required by the task. Do not wash disposable examination gloves for reuse.
Choose for the task
Check the intended purpose, material, size, and any relevant allergy considerations. Examination gloves and surgical gloves have different uses. A product’s colour or the word “medical” on a listing is not enough to establish suitability. Ask for the manufacturer’s specifications when you need clarification.
Make supplies easy to use correctly
Keep appropriate sizes available at the point of use. Store boxes according to their labels and protect them from contamination. Replace damaged or unsuitable products rather than trying to adapt them. Include glove selection and removal in staff training so that new team members learn the same routine.
A practical team check
At the next stock review, check available sizes, packaging condition, expiry information where present, and access to hand-hygiene supplies. Discuss recurring shortages with the person responsible for infection prevention. General awareness only: clinical procedures and local requirements should guide practice.
