Medical Supply Storage: Protect the Pack, Protect the Product
Simple receiving and stockroom checks that help preserve packaging integrity and reduce waste.
Storage starts at delivery
A medical supply is only as useful as the condition in which it reaches the person using it. Receiving checks, clear shelving, and careful handling help a team notice problems before an item enters routine stock. Treat storage requirements as part of the product specification.
Inspect before shelving
Compare the delivery with the order and inspect packaging for obvious damage. Record product codes, batch or lot information, and expiry dates where provided. Keep questionable items separate while the supplier or responsible clinician reviews them. Do not place uncertain stock back into circulation just to clear a receiving area.
Protect sterile packaging
CDC advises checking sterilized instrument packaging for moisture, tears, or punctures before use. Packaging integrity matters even when the item is within its stated expiry date. Follow the manufacturer’s and facility’s instructions for compromised packs; do not assume that taping a tear restores sterility.
Make stock rotation visible
Arrange dated supplies so earlier-expiring items are easy to identify and use first when appropriate. Keep labels visible and avoid overcrowding shelves. Follow product-specific temperature, humidity, light, and handling requirements rather than relying on one storage rule for every item.
Build a repeatable review
Assign responsibility for regular stock checks. Track recurring damage, over-ordering, and near-expiry stock so purchasing can improve. A short receiving checklist can include item, quantity, packaging, expiry, storage instructions, and discrepancies. These are operational suggestions; sterile-product handling must follow your approved procedures.
